Sinn Féin MP welcomes A5 announcement

14 February, 2012 - by Westminster

Sinn Féin MP for West Tyrone Pat Doherty today welcomed the announcement that the A5 project is to commence. Mr Doherty said that despite many people claiming the project was never going to happen, Sinn Féin never gave up on the A5 and today’s announcement is a testimony to that work, particularly over recent months since the Irish government scaled back its funding.

Mr Doherty said:

“Sinn Féin has been the lead party in the campaign for the upgrade of this strategic road transport corridor. Today is a good news story for the North/West and the whole of the island. Despite apparently being binned several times, Sinn Féin never gave up on the project and in particular Martin McGuinness led the way in making sure it would be delivered.

“This is the largest ever infrastructural project west of the Bann and means that people will now be in a position to enjoy the tangible benefits such as significant cuts to journey times, increased roads safety, reduced traffic congestion, improved air quality and enhancement of the economic competitiveness of the region.

“It is clear that today’s announcement represents a pivotal turning point in terms of re-dressing the infrastructural imbalance west of the Bann and in the north/west region of Ireland.

“It is now incumbent on the Irish government to fulfil its responsibility and come forward with its side of the agreement by providing the funding which will link the north/west with the rest of Ireland.”
