Justice Minister appears content to let situation in Maghaberry fester

22 February, 2012 - by Jennifer McCann

Sinn Féin MLA Jennifer McCann said Justice Minister David Ford’s excuses for not replacing the degrading and unnecessary strip searching in Maghaberry prison just don’t hold up.

Jennifer McCann, who is a member of the Justice Committee at the Assembly said:

“David Ford visited other prisons both in Ireland and Britain where they use alternative methods to strip searching, is he saying that those prisons are not secure?

“These alternatives used in other prisons are clearly safe otherwise they would not be used. The continuing use of degrading and unnecessary strip searches can be ended speedily if the will is there. Clearly the alternatives are there.

“David Ford appears to be content to let the situation at Maghaberry fester while a simple solution is staring him in the face. This is unacceptable.”
