Mac Lochlainn calls for immediate cessation of military attacks in Syria

22 February, 2012 - by Pádraig Mac Lochlainn

The Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs and Trade Pádraig Mac Lochlainn TD has called on the Syrian government to respect the democratic right of its people to protest and to put an immediate halt to attacks on the civilian population..

Speaking from Leinster House Deputy Mac Lochlainn said:

“The situation in Syria is now beyond crisis point. In order for meaningful negotiations to commence a cessation of violence by all parties is essential.

“Thousands of people have been killed in a situation that is escalating by the hour. The Syrian government must allow their people the democratic right to protest. These legitimate demonstrations must not be repressed by military attacks.

“Sinn Féin calls on the Syrian government to respect the human and civil rights of its citizens. The appalling level of violence on ordinary people must stop before any meaningful negotiation can take place. This is the accepted form of international conflict resolution. It is for the Syrian people themselves to resolve the situation in a climate of non- violence. ”
