“An Bord Pleanála decision – Government must act to support existing Children’s Hospitals” – Ó Caoláin

23 February, 2012 - by Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD

Commenting on the decision of An Bórd Pleanála to refuse planning permission for the proposed Children’s Hospital of Ireland on the Mater Hospital site, Sinn Féin Health & Children spokesperson Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD said:

“Whatever people’s views of the proposed location of the hospital this decision by An Bórd Pleanála can only be viewed as a huge setback because the priority for all of us should be that the long promised new children’s hospital should be built.

“This decision requires immediate action on the part of the Minister for Health James Reilly and the government.

“First and foremost, additional resources must be made available to the existing children’s hospitals without delay to address the crisis highlighted only this week by the Irish Association of Emergency Medicine which has exposed the disgraceful situation in emergency departments of children’s hospitals.

“It is totally unacceptable to have children waiting on trolleys for up to 12 hours and to have to face long waiting lists for essential care. The existing children’s hospitals have served the children of Ireland well but their ability to continue to do so has been compromised by government cuts. Those cuts must be withdrawn and the resources made available to existing children’s hospitals whose role is more vital than ever now, given the further inevitable delay in developing the new Children’s Hospital of Ireland.” ENDS
