VEC Chiefs pocketed €500,000 in allowances and expenses in 2011

7 March, 2012 - by Mary Lou McDonald TD

Sinn Féin Public Expenditure and Reform Spokesperson Mary Lou McDonald TD has described the monies paid out annually to VEC Chiefs in allowances and expenses as staggering.

Deputy McDonald said:

“VEC Chiefs received on average allowances and expenses worth €14,981 in 2011 on top of very generous annual salaries worth between €95,798 and €145,952.

“Recently the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform instructed all other departments to withhold expenses and allowances from new beneficiaries including teachers and other public servants pending the outcome of a review of the same. Many of those affected are on annual salaries as low as €27,814.

“In it hard to comprehend why the Government continues to justify paying out these excessive pay, pensions, allowances and expenses to high rollers across the public sector whilst attacking the pay expectations of the lowest paid public servants. In 2011 alone VEC Chiefs were paid €4.2 million in wages, expenses and allowances.” ENDS
