Stanley welcomes turf cutting proposals
Sinn Féin spokesperson on Environment, Community and Local Government, Brian Stanley TD, has welcomed the passing of a motion in the Dáil last night to support turf cutters and to put in place a national plan to deal with all bogs where there are difficulties.
“I’ve been working with the Turf Cutters and Contractors Association (TCCA) on this issue over the past year. A month ago I put forward alternative proposals to Minister Jimmy Deenihan to relocate the designation to bogs in Laois where there is no turf cutting taking place.
“I again raised this proposal last night in the Dáil and I am delighted that these proposals will be considered as part of the national plan to be put forward to Europe for approval.”
Stanley concluded: “Last night was a good night for rural Ireland and for turf cutters and I’ll keep working with them until this issue is resolved.” ENDS
