Funding the three full cycles of IVF is way ahead – Ramsey

20 March, 2012 - by Sue Ramsey

West Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Sue Ramsey has welcomed the Heath Minister’s announcement that there is to be funding for frozen embryo transfers but said the Minister also needed to move towards funding the three full cycles of IVF as recommended by NICE.

Sue Ramsey, who is also Chair of the Assembly’s Health Committee said:

“I welcome the support of the full Assembly for the motion highlighting the need for NICE guidelines on IVF to be implemented here.

“While we have made good progress on IVF provision over the past ten years we are still not providing three full cycles as recommended by NICE.

“A single cycle of IVF for a woman aged 23-35 has an average success rate of 20%. In all, 80% of women will not get pregnant on one cycle.

“We are out of sync with health services in other jurisdictions as locally people have to go private if they need more than one cycle at a cost of £4,000 per cycle.

“It is five years since the last review of fertility services and this would be a good time for the Minister to look at this issue again.”
