McCartney slams violence following Setanta Cup match at Brandywell

21 March, 2012 - by Raymond McCartney

Sinn Féin Foyle MLA Raymond McCartneyhas condemned those behind the violence which took place around the Brandywell Stadium following the Setanta Sports Cup quarter-final between Derry City and Linfield Football clubs on Tuesday night.

Raymond McCartney who attended the matchsaid“The violent scenes witnessed followingthe Derry City and Linfield match aroundthe Brandywell Stadium have no place in sport and certainly is something that no one wants to see happen again .

"A number of Linfield supporters attacked homes in Southend Park and Brandywell Court , attacked a Derry City official, hurled sectarian abuse at stewards and residents and overturned over security screening. Residents living in the surrounding streets were very worried that this could have spiralled out of control right on their doorstep.

"I would like to commend Derry City Football Club stewards and community representatives who worked very hard on the ground to defuse the situation as speedily as possible.

"It has been reported that supporter’s buses leaving the city were attacked by a small number of children, that equally is wrong and shouldn’t have taken place.

"What happened on Tuesday night should not be allowed to undermine the excellent work being done by everyone involved at Derry City Football Club on a daily basis.
