Mahon an indictment of culture of political corruption – Adams
Commenting on the publication of the final Report of the Mahon Tribunal Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams said:
“The final report of the Mahon Tribunal is a damning indictment of the culture of corruption that has blighted the political life of this state for decades and caused widespread social damage.
“Political corruption is not a victimless crime. The principal victims are Irish citizens who have seen our economy destroyed by the property bubble that resulted from the corrupt relationship between developers and politicians.
“The victims also include whole communities moved into badly built housing estates with few facilities as corrupt planning allowed Dublin city expand in an appallingly ill-planned way while property speculators and developers made big money.
“While Mahon has revealed that politicians from all the establishment parties, Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and Labour, took bribes from developers, perverting the planning process for profit, the upper echelons of Fianna Fáil in particular has been implicated over a 30-year period.
“While the current Fianna Fáil leadership is busy disassociating itself from those directly implicated in Mahon, Micheál Martin, who was a senior member of Bertie Ahern’s cabinet and several of his Dáil colleagues have questions to answer regarding their actions at that time.
“If the citizens of this state are to regain their confidence in the political system, the government must implement the recommendations of Judge Mahon aimed at combating corruption and making the planning process more transparent and accessible.”
