McDonald calls for referendum date before Easter break
Sinn Féin Deputy Leader Mary Lou McDonald TD has called on the government to name the date for the Austerity Treaty referendum before breaking for the Easter recess.
The Dublin Central TD said:
“Sinn Féin is calling on the government to name the date for the Austerity Treaty referendum so that the public campaign can get up and running.
“We also want the government to postpone the legislation on the European Stability Mechanism and European Communities Bill until after the referendum takes place and to veto the blackmail clause if the people reject the Austerity Treaty.
“Citizens need the space and time to debate and decide on the Treaty without the blackmail implicit in the threat to deny future bailout funds.
“Sinn Féin is prepared for a major campaign across the state in opposition to the ratification of this treaty. We will set out our stall based on the substance of the Treaty and we call on the Yes side to do the same.”
