Government and FF blocking debate on Mahon Tribunal in the Seanad - Ó Clochartaigh

29 March, 2012

"Fianna Fáil, and the Government parties are cooperating to block a discussion on the Mahon report," according to Sinn Féin senator, Trevor Ó Clochartaigh.
"For three days in a row, Sinn Féin sought a debate on the implications of the Tribunal’s findings, and each time it was refused.
The report has been discussed in depth by the media, throughout the country, in the Dáil bar, and indeed in the Dáil itself, yet neither Fianna Fáil, the government, nor even the majority of other senators thought it worthwhile to discuss in the Seanad this week.
The Seanad is now in recess for some three weeks. I suggested that we sit next Tuesday to have a special discussion on the Mahon report, but this was refused as well," according to the Galway West senator.
"This report cost hundreds of millions of Euro, heard evidence from over 400 people and took 15 years. The recommendations contained in the report are very important, and there should be discussion on them this week, even if a further more comprehensive discussion was necessary at a later date.
Recently for example, there was a discussion regarding the prayer which is recited before the business of the Seanad. It is a pity that the same importance was not placed on an issue such as this."
"Before this report was published, the government committed to a debate on it, and Fianna Fáil said they would welcome it, while the independents in the Seanad regularly promote the value of openness and transparency in the political process, but when it came to a vote on whether or not Mahon would be discussed in the Seanad on this side of the Easter recess, only Sinn Féin and David Norris voted for it,” according to Ó Clochartaigh.
"It's no wonder that the public has lost faith in the political process when events like this transpire. There are many people concerned at the possibility of wide-spread corruption in the political system, they are concerned that the recommendations of the Mahon Tribunal will not be implemented, and they are suspicious when they see the likes of Denis O'Brien sharing a platform with the Taoiseach. The blockage of this debate does not assist that lack of faith."

An Rialtas agus FF ag cur bac ar dhíospóireacht faoi Mahon sa Seanad – Ó Clochartaigh

“Tá FF agus páirtithe an Rialtais ag obair as lámha a chéile chun bac a chuir ar phlé faoi thuarascáil Mahon sa Seanad’, a deir Seanadóir Shinn Féin, Trevor Ó Clochartaigh.
“Le trí lá as a chéile d’iarr Sinn Féin go bpléifí impleachtaí an bhinse fiosruithe seo agus diúltaíodh don iarratas sin gach uair. Tá an tuarascáil pléite go mion sna meáin, ar fud na tíre, i mbeár na Dála agus ar feadh trí lá sa Dáil féin agus níorbh bhfiú leis an Rialtas, Fianna Fáil, ná formhór na Seanadóirí eile go bpléifí sa Teach Uachtair é an tseachtain seo. Tá an Seanad ag dul ar scor inniu ar feadh beagnach trí seachtain. Mhol mé go bhféadfaí teacht ar ais ar an Mháirt seo chugainn le plé speisialta a dhéanamh faoi Mahon, ach ní raibh aon ghlacadh leis sin ach an oiread’, dar le Seanadoir Ghaillimh Thiar.
“Caitheadh na céadta milliuin euro, cloiseadh fianaise ó os cionn cheithre chéad duine, rud a thóg cúig bhliana déag. Tá impleachtaí móra ag na moltaí atá déanta sa tuarascáil fíor thabhachtach agus ba chóir go mbeadh plé déanta futhu an tseachtain seo, fiú dá mbeadh díospóireacht níos iomlána de dhíth níos déanaí. Nuair a bhí ceist faoin bpáidir roimh imeachtaí an tSeanaid ann, mar shampla, bhí diospóireacht mór ann faoi ar an bpointe. Is é an trua nár bhfiú don Rialtas an omós céanna a thabhairt don ábhar tromchúiseach seo.
“Gheall an Rialtas roimh fhoilsiú na tuarascála go mbeadh diospóireacht ann faoi, duirt Fianna Fáíl go bhfáilteoidís roimhe, bíonn na neamhspleáigh sa tSeanad ag caint ar an gá le hoscailteacht agus trédhearcacht sa phroiséas polaitiúil, ach nuair a tháinig sé chun vóta go bpléifí Mahon an taobh seo de shaoire na Cásca, níor vótáil ach Sinn Féin agus David Norris ar a shon”, a deir Ó Clochartaigh.
“Ní iontas go bhfuil muinín caillte ag an bpobal sa chóras polaitiúil nuair atá a leithéad seo ag tarlú. Tá go leor daoine imníoch faoi choiriúlacht forleathan sa gcóras, tá siad imníoch nach bhfuil moltaí Binse fiosruithe Moriarty curtha i gcrích, bíonn siad amhrasach nuair a fheiceann siad leithéidí Denis O’Brien ag roinnt árdán leis an Taoiseach agus tá an chosc seo ar dhíospóireacht ag cur leis an easpa muiníne sin”, a deir Seanadóir Shinn Féin.
