Scrap the Household Charge – Adams

3 April, 2012 - by Gerry Adams

Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams has called on the government to scrap the household charge.

Mr Adams was speaking today as the cabinet met for the first time since the passing of the March 31st deadline for payment of the charge.

He said:

“The household charge has been a disaster for this government from start to finish. With the deadline now passed and roughly only 50% having paid the charge it is clear that it has failed.

“It has been rejected by the people and the government should now scrap the charge. A new course of action is needed.

“Sinn Féin is calling for the repeal of the Household Charge. The government should introduce a third tax band of 48% on earnings over €100,000. This would bring in €410 million in a fair and progressive manner.” ENDS
