Pub prices - City Centre candidate urges publicans not to "top up" price rise on pint

26 May, 2004

A local elections candidate for Dublin City Centre has urged publicans not to "top up" the cost of a pint when brewing giant Diageo adds 6 cents to a pint next week

There is speculation that the price of a pint may shoot up by as much as 15 cents next Tuesday when publicans add to the increase of 6 cents a pint brought in by brewers Diageo, suppliers of Guinness, Harp, Carlsberg and Budweiser.

Ciarán Mac Annraoi, a Sinn Féin candidate for the Smithfield area and Dublin City Centre, said:

"It would be unfair for publicans to top up Diageo's price hike or try and make up for any reported drops in trade by penalising regular pub goers through forcing even bigger price rises on them.

"Rather than cash in on next week's increase, publicans should try and keep loyal customers and encourage others in a competitive hospitality industry by keeping standards high and prices low."ENDS
