Ferris calls on government to clarify water privatisation issue

18 April, 2012 - by Pearse Doherty TD

The Sinn Féin spokesperson on communications, energy and natural resources, Martin Ferris TD has called on the government to clarify the situation regarding the possible privatisation of the collection of water charges.
Deputy Ferris said: “Given that Irish Water will come under the responsibility of An Bord Gáis, and in the light of the decision to privatise the actual sale of gas to consumers, this is an issue that needs urgent clarification.
“Even though Minister O’Dowd has said that the control of water will not be privatised, there is nothing to prevent the same hiving off of the consumer sales end as with gas and electricity.
“Indeed the logic of what is proposed to be done with Bord Gáis in relation to the supply of gas would suggest that that is what will happen at some stage.
“That would surely make a mockery of the claim that the introduction of water charges was in some way designed to assist the public finances. Rather the direct profits from this would accrue to the company responsible for collecting the money from consumers.”
