Ó Snodaigh secures commitment from Minister on carers

25 April, 2012 - by Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD

The Sinn Féin spokesperson on social protection Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD has secured a commitment from Minister Burton to exclude Carers’ Allowance from the single working age payment.

Deputy Ó Snodaigh welcomed the significant announcement from the Minister today that in line with the Joint Committee Report, of which he was the author, the Carers’ Allowance will not be merged into the single working age payment.

Deputy Ó Snodaigh said:

“The Minister accepted that the condition for receipt of Carers’ Allowance i.e. that you must be engaged in the provision of full-time care, is completely at odds with the activation/genuinely seeking and available for full-time work condition of Jobseekers Allowance.

“This is good news and will be a relief for many carers out there who feared the significant financial loss that would have resulted from the proposal to merge the payment.

“I also pressed the Minister to offer carers the option of voluntarily opting into future activation supports.”
