Unionist political leaders need to get a grip of loyalist feud
Sinn Féin East Belfast Representative Cllr. Joe O'Donnell has called on unionist political leaders to 'get a grip' of the loyalist feud which is escalating in the area.
Cllr. O'Donnell said:
" Hugh Orde and the British Secretary of State seem to be of the opinion that the situation in East Belfast is under control. Yet on a daily basis we have seen bomb attacks of one kind or another. The small nationalist community in the East of the city is living in genuine fear that this internal loyalist situation will spill over into violence against them.
" Sinn Féin along with unionist and loyalist community representatives have done much good work over the past year in setting up mechanisms to ensure that both communities in interface areas of East Belfast have a peaceful summer. This work cannot be allowed to be jeopardised by ongoing tensions and feuding within loyalism.
" I would again appeal to unionist political and community leaders in East Belfast to redouble their efforts to see this feud ended and for the climate of fear in East Belfast lifted." ENDS
