Sinn Féin welcomes under 18 sunbed ban

1 May, 2012

Sinn Féin MLA and chair of the Health Committee, Sue Ramsey, has welcomed the legislation being brought into effect today that will ban under 18’s from using sunbeds.

Speaking today Ms Ramsey said: “The banning of the use of sunbeds for under 18’s is a welcome move and something which Sinn Féin have advocated for some time now.

“Skin cancer is now the third most common cancer for women in their thirties after cancer of the breast and the cervix. The chance of developing malignant melanoma increases by 75% in the under 35 age bracket with sunbed usage.

“In fact using a sun bed once a month or more, can double your risk of developing skin cancer. This is extremely worrying.

“While the legislation is welcome we now must see robust enforcement of this in order to protect our young people.

“Further to this we must see a responsible attitude from those who use sunbeds in the home. The dangerous are now very well known, and I would urge parents to protect their children by not letting them use these machines in the home.”
