MLA Welcomes A8 Start Date

1 May, 2012 - by Oliver McMullan

Sinn Féin MLA Oliver McMullan has welcomed the news that the Larne to Belfast dual carriageway will begin in June this year.

Mr. McMullan said, “Larne is one of the most busiest ports on the island of Ireland and the amount of traffic that comes and goes from the port is very substantial.  This upgrade on the existing road will help reduce travel times between Larne and Belfast and improve road safety along that route.

“I welcome the news that the 14.4km stretch of road will begin in June and hopefully will be fully opened in the near future. This is also an opportunity for local labour to be engaged in the construction of the roadway and for local businesses to supply materials needed for the road.

“I would call on the Minister to make sure that local labour clauses are built into any contracts so that we can begin to address unemployment

“This road when finished will add to economic regeneration of the Larne area by making it more accessible to businesses and tourist trade."
