Sinn Féin welcomes announcement on pilot scheme to end strip searching
Sinn Féin MLA Sean Lynch has welcomed the Justice Minister David Ford’s announcement in the Assembly today that a pilot scheme will be introduced that will see technology used instead of strip searching in prisons.
The Justice Minister made the announcement in answer to a question put by the Fermanagh & South Tyrone MLA.
A member of the Justice Committee at the Assembly, Sean Lynch said: “Sinn Féin welcomes the announcement that a pilot scheme is to be introduced using advanced technology in place of the unnecessary and demeaning use of strip searching.
“We call on the Minister to introduce it as soon as possible throughout the North as there should be no more strip searching especially when the technology is available.
“Sinn Féin has long campaigned for an end to strip searching and with this announcement our position has been vindicated and we are hopeful that this will bring an end to the protests in Maghaberry Prison.”
