Mobile rural coverage and roaming charges raised at Stormont - Flanagan

2 May, 2012 - by Phil Flanagan

Sinn Féin Enterprise Spokesperson Phil Flanagan has today attended an event with representatives from the four main mobile phone networks in Parliament Buildings. Mr Flanagan used the opportunity to discuss existing coverage issues within Fermanagh & South Tyrone and to seek the abolition of roaming charges across Ireland.

Phil Flanagan MLA said:

"This was a very useful and worthwhile event. I was glad that all the main operators were in one room, along with Ofcom, to discuss network provision in rural areas and the need for further investment from the networks to improve rural coverage.

"There currently exist extensive black spots and weak coverage areas across Fermanagh & South Tyrone and it is important that every opportunity possible is taken to raise these matters with the network operators.

"The other issue I raised with them was that of roaming charges within Ireland and the unfair nature of such extortionate charges. I called on them to move quickly to abolish this unfair charge ahead of impending action by the European Parliament.

"I have also invited the group to visit Fermanagh to see first hand the issues that currently exist and to hear from local people about the impact of poor coverage and roaming charges."
