Sinn Féin - On Your Side

United Ireland increasingly important in the time ahead

27 May, 2004

Speaking this morning after the launch of a new all Ireland news paper Ireland Today, Sinn Féin EU candidate Bairbre de Brún MLA has said that the all Ireland agenda and Irish unity will be increasingly important in the time ahead both here at home and internationally.

Ms de Brún said:

"Sinn Féin is an Irish republican party. Our core objective is the ending of partition and the creation of an independent national democracy.

"We want to play a full part in the EU, on an equal basis with other nations. Restoring Irish sovereignty to all of the people of Ireland will allow us to play this part more effectively.

"It is our firm view that the social, economic, political and cultural well being of all of the people on the island of Ireland would be best served by such a scenario.

"The economic arguments in favour of Irish unity are compelling, as are those for the development of farming, public service provision and infrastructure development.

"Equally important are the political arguments, as the overwhelming majority of people across the island vote for political parties who have Irish unity as one of their stated key objectives.

"The Good Friday Agreement explicitly acknowledged these realities through the creation of the All Ireland Ministerial Council and Cross Border Implementation Bodies.

"The all Ireland agenda and Irish unity will be increasingly important in the time ahead both here at home and internationally." ENDS
