Government admits it has no plan to deal with economic and currency crisis – Tóibín
Speaking today Sinn Féin jobs spokesperson Peadar Tóibín TD said “Pat Rabbitte has admitted what everyone already knew, that this government is out of their depth and has no plan to deal with the economic or Eurozone currency crisis.” He said: “The Government is failing at home and in Europe and its policies of austerity are making things worse. People want solutions not threats.”
Deputy Tóibín said:
“The Government has finally admitted what everyone already knew, that it has no plan to deal with the economic or Eurozone currency crisis. Figures released this weekend once again demonstrate that the Government is out of its depth.
“The mortgage crisis is getting worse with more than 115,000 households in mortgage distress at the end of April. The crisis in our health system is getting worse with a 24% increase in people waiting more than 6 months for surgery.
“Despite its talk about investment in jobs 1,500 people are emigrating every week, unemployment remains stagnant at 14% and with two quarters of negative growth the economy is officially back in recession.
“Not only has the Government no plan, but its policies of austerity are making things worse.
“The Government is failing at home and in Europe. There is now an urgent need to send the Government a clear signal that austerity is not working. A strong no vote on May 31st will send such a signal. It will be a vote for a change of direction. It will be a vote for investment in jobs and growth. It will be a vote for a new approach to the Eurozone crisis.”
