McKay welcomes “Walk to School Week”

23 May, 2012

Sinn Féin Education spokesperson Daithi McKay has welcomed the start of “Walk to School Week” (21st   May to 25th May)

The theme for this year’s event is ‘Step Forward in Time’ and it aims to encourage more people to consider the health, financial, social and environmental benefits of walking. Schools across the North are taking part in the event.

This year’s theme also aims to enhance pupils' understanding of the importance of preserving our planet for future generations. It encourages children to consider the significant contribution they can make by choosing a more sustainable travel option.

Mr McKay said,

“I welcome the launch of “Walk to School Week”. It is very important that we encourage more children to enjoy the environmental, health, social and financial benefits of walking the journey to and from school.

Many parents are apprehensive about letting their children walk to school due to heavy traffic around schools at peak times of the day. It is very important that motorists show due care and attention when traveling close to schools and adhere to the speed limits.
