Must Be Clarity on Plastic Bag Levy

30 May, 2012 - by Cathal Boylan

Sinn Féin MLA Cathal Boylan has said there must be clear guidelines issued to consumers and businesses before the introduction of the plastic bags levy

The Sinn Féin Environmental spokesperson stated,

“It is important that before this levy is introduced that consumers and businesses alike understand which bags come under the levy.

“The levy is designed to reduce the number of non biodegradable plastic bags and therefore protect the environment impact and cut the cost of cleaning up these bags.

“However in order to maximise the potential of this Bill it is essential that consumers understand which bags come under the tax as there are a myriad of different bags in use and some of them will be exempt from the tax.

“Businesses must also be aware of what bags come under the levy as when it was introduced in the South some stores faced big fines as they thought the bags they were using were exempt when in fact they were not.

“I am calling on the Minister of the Environment Alex Attwood to begin a put together information that will guide both consumers and businesses alike as to how the levy will be implemented.”
