No accountability in Department of Finance blunder reports

7 June, 2012 - by Mary Lou McDonald TD

Sinn Féin Public Expenditure and Reform Spokesperson Mary Lou McDonald TD has described as astonishing the failure of both reports into the Department of Finance €3.6 billion blunder to hold to account former Secretary General Kevin Cardiff.

Deputy McDonald said:

“Both reports include repeated references to a lone under resourced statistician seconded to the department yet there’s not a mention of the former Secretary General of the Department of Finance under whose watch the €3.6 billion blunder happened.

“Accountability is the cornerstone of good public administration. Yet it continues to elude those at the very top of the civil and public sector. Hiding behind system failures is simply not good enough. It was the former Secretary General’s responsibility to ensure the necessary checks and balances were in place. Both reports should have fully reflected this fact.” ENDS
