Scope of Constitutional Convention should be widened – Adams

7 June, 2012 - by Gerry Adams

Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams TD has called for the widening of the scope of the proposed Constitutional Convention.

Speaking following a briefing the Taoiseach held today with opposition leaders Teachta Adams said:

“While I welcome today’s briefing and the initiative to convene a constitutional convention it is regrettable that the government opted to limit the scope of the convention.

“We believe that there is a clear need for a radical and far reaching reform of the current Irish Constitution with a view to drawing up a new constitution as the cornerstone of a new republic.

“Irish society has been changed radically in recent years through both the development of the peace process in the North and through the impact of the current economic crisis.

“Given these changes the process of constitutional reform has the potential to inspire the people of Ireland to revive their hopes for a positive future and act as a catalyst for common interest, common vision and a common purpose.

“Sinn Fein believes that it is imperative that issues such as voting rights for all Irish passport holders are included within the scope of the convention.”
