Borewell Scheme Must Be Mean Tested

20 June, 2012 - by Cathal Ó hOisín

Sinn Féin MLA Cathal Ó hOisín said he is disappointed that there is no consideration for those people on benefits when applying for the Rural Borewell Scheme.

Mr. Ó hOisín said:

“While I welcome the scheme as a means of connecting people with a clean and reliable source of water I am disappointed that no provision has been made for people on benefit to apply.

“The cost of applying for the scheme is £350 which is quite a large sum for someone on benefits and will mean many will not apply due to the cost.

“This will leave them without a supply of clean water and having to haul water either from a well or use bottled water.

“I am calling on the Ministers of Agriculture and Regional Development to look at ways of finding the small amount of money needed to cover the expense of connecting those on benefits to mains water.”
