McDonald welcomes publication of Plan B report
Speaking after today’s launch of Plan B by Claiming Our Future, Sinn Féin Vice President Mary Lou McDonald said that, “this publication makes an important contribution to the growing debate on alternatives to austerity.”
Deputy McDonald said:
“Claiming Our Future is an important voice in Irish civic society. Since its foundation it has been to the forefront of promoting alternative political, social and economic policy agendas.
“Today’s launch is probably the most important contribution by Claiming Our Future to date. The document argues that there is an alternative recovery plan to the failed polities of austerity pursued by Fianna Fail, Fine Gael and Labour.
“Plan B includes five key policy recommendations; an investment programme of €15 billion to get people back to work; progressive tax reform including tax on high earners and on wealth; increasing public expenditure to 45% of GDP to protect and develop front line public services; protecting low income families and boosting domestic demand; raising additional resources through debt write-downs.
“Sinn Féin has been making similar arguments since the start of the crisis. ICTU and SIPTU have also been arguing a similar approach. Today Claiming Our Future has added their voice to the demand to an alternative to the failed policies of austerity.
“I would urge people to engage with Plan B and the Claiming Our Future campaign. The website www.claimingourfuture.ie has full details of the campaign.
“Sinn Féin strongly believes that there is a better and fairer way out of our current economic crisis. In the coming period we will be outlining our own proposals for investing in jobs and in the autumn we will be launching our own budget alternative.
“I would urge all those who believe in such alternatives to work together to achieve what are clearly shared objectives.” ENDS
