Welfare changes disastrous for those most in need – Fra McCann

25 June, 2012 - by Fra McCann

Sinn Féin Welfare Rights Spokesperson Fra McCann MLA said plans to withdraw housing benefit for under 25s will have a disastrous impact on young people.

The West Belfast MLA said the announcement by the British Prime Minister on welfare cuts had more to do with Tory ideology than improving the system.

Mr McCann said:

“If you add this to the shared room allowance where housing benefit will be halved and the proposed under-occupancy regulations with thousands of housing executive tenants having their benefit reduced, those most in need are being targeted and it will undoubtedly lead to homelessness.

“The welfare system is under attack and the losers will the vulnerable and people experiencing mental health problems.

“The claimed purpose of these changes is to force people into work that does not exist in the first place.

“The British government should be looking at ways to stimulate the economy and create jobs rather than attacking the meagre income of those who are unable through no fault of their own to find work.” CRÍOCH/END
