Cypriot EU presidency “a unique opportunity” for Ireland – Reilly

3 July, 2012 - by Kathryn Reilly

Sinn Féin’s EU Affairs Spokesperson Senator Kathryn Reilly has welcomed the beginning of the Cypriot Presidency of the EU and said it was a “unique opportunity” for Ireland.

Senator Reilly said:

“I welcome Cyprus’ assumption of the EU presidency as of this week and wish them all the best for the coming period. The next six months will be a critical time in negotiations of great importance around the EU’s seven year budget and the rules for the CAP and Common Fisheries’ Policy over that period.”

“Uniquely, for Ireland this Presidency should be of great benefit if the government grasps the opportunity. Cyprus is a small divided nation which is now facing years of international pressure to adapt policies of austerity like Ireland. The chance to build an alliance to work on common issues such as national reconciliation processes and economic development of the EU’s peripheries should be clear to all. The fact that the Irish Presidency directly follows the Cypriot one means real momentum can be built up on common issues between our two island nations if the government applies itself to doing so.”
