Welcome for State funding for treatment of women with defective breast implants

4 July, 2012 - by Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD

Sinn Féin Health spokesperson Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD has welcomed the announcement that the State is to fund treatment for women who received defective PIP breast implants.

He said:

“This is welcome news for the women who have undergone great distress as a result of the disgraceful and irresponsible behaviour of the French firm Poly Implant Prothese (PIP) which supplied the defective breast implants to clinics in Ireland and elsewhere. It is right that the health needs of these women should be addressed by the State.

“I supported their call for that assistance from the beginning of their campaign. While the State will bear this cost, the clinics in Ireland who have failed to step up to the mark and the PIP company at EU level should be vigorously pursued for reimbursement of the public purse. And the government needs to act with speed to properly regulate this sector.”
