Jobless figures up and long term unemployment increasing

4 July, 2012

Speaking with regard to the Live Register Figures for June, Peadar Tóibín TD, Sinn Féin spokesperson on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation said:

“The live figures detail 451,974 of our people signing on the live register and giving an underlying unemployment rate of 14.9%.

“The government has claimed that jobs are the number one priority for this government. Since coming to power, despite rising emigration, overall unemployment is now reaching toward 15%.

“Since coming to power long term unemployment has increased with almost 200,000 people now unemployed for over 12 months.

“It is clear that government policy is failing. It is clear that the promise by Enda Kenny to create 100,000 additional jobs will not be realised. It is clear that despite the promise of jobs in the recent referendum campaign jobs are continuing to be lost.

“This government must come forward with a credible plan to create and sustain employment as the driver for economic growth. It is time to invest in our economy, our people and our businesses.

“Sinn Féin has developed, costed and published proposals that would redirect resources into job creation that would address anticompetitive practises such as upward only rents and would build long term sustainable economic development and jobs.”
