Government must consider social consequences of public sector redundancies – Adams

14 July, 2012 - by Gerry Adams

Responding to news today that the government is set to seek a further 4,000 redundancies from the public sector Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams has said the government must think of the social consequences of its actions.

Speaking in Dublin today where he is attending his party’s Ard Comhairle meeting Deputy Adams said:

“We are all aware of the problems in our hospitals and our schools and the shortages of Gardaí as a result of government cutback and lay-offs in the public sector.

“Week in week out we here horror stories from our frontline services yet the government is now talking of a further 4,000 lay-offs in the public sector. There needs to be consideration given to the social consequences of this approach to public sector spending.

“If the government really wants to tackle public sector spending then it should start at the top and tackle the high earners. This government has consistently failed to take on the high earners in the public sector and continues to breach even its own salary cap for government advisors.

“Sinn Féin has proposed a cap of €100,000 of public sector wages which if implemented would save €265 million.

“Despite the rhetoric from this Fine Gael and Labour the truth is that the government has choices. Unfortunately it is making the wrong choices.” ENDS
