Ellis welcomes report on Pyrite and calls for swift action
Sinn Féin Housing spokesperson Dessie Ellis TD has welcomed the release of the report by the Pyrite Panel into pyrite contamination in houses. He said the report was long time coming and gave credit to the residents of pyrite contaminated houses and the Pyrite Action Group who campaigned long and hard to see progress on this issue.
Pyrite can occur naturally in stone. When exposed to air or water in its reactive form the mineral becomes unstable and can cause structural damage, including cracking and buckling of walls and floors.
Deputy Ellis said;
“This is a lengthy and detailed report and we shall have to wait and see what is done to implement the recommendations of the document. I am happy to see deadlines being put on the construction industry and the Construction Industry Federation, the Irish Concrete Federation, Homebond.
“These bodies have, particularly in the case of Homebond, so far shirked their responsibilities to the people who have had their lives turned upside down by the failure to detect this contaminant.
“This should never have been in these homes and the people responsible must be made to bring forward real solutions including contributing a large share of the money to repair these works.”
