Belfast Trust must address hip and knee backlog - Ramsey

6 August, 2012 - by Sue Ramsey

Sinn Féin MLA and spokesperson on health Sue Ramsey who is also the chairperson of the Health Committee at the Assembly has stated that the Belfast Health Trust has questions to answer in relation to the 100% increase in hip and knee operation waiting lists.

Speaking today Ms Ramsey said:

“There is obviously a concern that the figures indicating those who are waiting for hip and knee operations in the Belfast Trust area have increased 100% over the past two years.

“The questions that the Trust need to answer is why has this occurred and what is the strategy to reduce this list.

“This clearly impacts on people quality of life and mobility and add to extra problems in terms of health budgets such as addressing this backlog that was allowed to amass, care for those who are waiting and mobility costs.

“This is also a clear example how not dealing with one health problem can lead to problems elsewhere. It can lead to increased weight problems, fitness levels decreasing and depression to name a few areas that those on the waiting list can encounter.

“This is a problem that the Department must take very seriously and I would ask what pressure will they be placing on the Belfast Trust to see that this excessive waiting list is addressed with urgency."
