Bonfire only delivers destruction to people of the area

9 August, 2012 - by Fra McCann

West Belfast Sinn Féin MLA Fra McCann said the destruction left in the wake last night’s bonfire at Divis proved that these fires should be consigned to the past.

The Sinn Féin MLA said:

“Sinn Féin have for a number of years now tried to pull people away from this type of event which only leads to a night of destruction and the mess left the day after.

“The bonfire at Divis is now an excuse for excessive drunkenness and violence inflicted on our own community by those who torture this community throughout the year as it attracts anti-socials elements from throughout the city.

“Young children who collect the wood have been encouraged to do so by older people in the background and these people need to come forward and explain what good the bonfire does for the area and its people.

“I was interned twice and as a former internee these bonfires certainly do not represent any marking of that time in our history. They should stop and the people encouraging need to explain to the community why they continue to do so.”
