Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams has extended his ‘best wishes and congratulations to Katie Taylor for her tremendous victory today in winning the lightweight gold at the Olympic Games in London today’.

Deputy Adams also praised the efforts of Belfast boxers Paddy Barnes and Michael Conlan and Cian O Connor and John Joe Nevin who have succeeded in winning Olympic medals.Teachta Adams said: ‘The whole country will be holding its breath tomorrow as Paddy Barnes, John Joe Nevin and Michael Conlan take to the ring for gold.

’The Sinn Féin leader commended the success of all of the Irish athletes, including medial winners Richard and Peter Chambers and Alan Chambers, and from all parts of the island who have participated in this Olympics ‘making it the most successful ever for Ireland.’

Gerry Adams said:‘All of our athletes have performed exceptionally during this Olympic games. They have done Ireland proud and have provided sporting role models for our young people. The Irish people are hugely proud of their achievements."
