Problems in Fire Service need to be tackled immediately – Sue Ramsey
Sinn Féin MLA Sue Ramsey said it was crucial that problems within the Fire Service that are leading to poor morale need to be tackled as soon as possible.
The West Belfast MLA and Chair of the Assembly’s Health Committee said:
“It is worrying that the Fire Service has been allowed to get into such a poor state of management. Fire-fighters do a magnificent job that we are all extremely grateful for so it is crucial that they are able to work in a comfortable and relaxed environment
“We have seen this catalogue of problems within the Fire Service over the last few years but the issues are not limited to the Fire Service as there have been problems in terms of management and governance within the health trusts.
“The Department needs to get a grip on management and governance issues and make sure they are embedded across health trusts, Ambulance Service and the Fire Service. I welcome that the Minister has commissioned independent reviews of the Fire Service and has asked the Audit Office to become involved. It has also appointed an Interim Chief executive who will be responsible for making significant changes in terms of how the organisation is managed.
“I would anticipate that the Health Committee will wish to be briefed by the Interim Chief Executive on how he plans to sort out some of the difficult issues facing the Fire Service and will be seeking assurances from him we will see real change and progress.”
