Gerry Adams calls for NO vote in the citizenship referendum

9 June, 2004

Mr. Adams also called on the electorate to come out and vote NO to the citizenship referendum, which he said would enshrine inequality in the Constitution and undermine the Good Friday Agreement.

Mr. Adams said:

"Sinn Féin is calling for a NO vote to the government's citizenship referendum as it will enshrine inequality in the Constitution and undermine the Good Friday Agreement.

"The issues at the heart of this referendum require proper debate. Sinn Féin wants to see a comprehensive immigration policy that is positive, compassionate, human rights compliant and anti racist. That policy must fully recognise the positive contribution of immigrants to Irish society and to the Irish economy."ENDS
