Troika’s proposals because of government austerity programme: ÓSnodaigh
Responding to reports of Troika proposals to cut welfare payments, Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Social Protection Aengus Ó Snodaigh said:
“I am calling on the government to adopt an alternative approach to recovery. The economy needs a major investment to act as a stimulus. Social welfare spending should be seen as a vital part of that.
“The Troika is proposing that jobseekers payments be cut only because the government told the troika it wants to follow the austerity route.
“If the government were to go back to the Troika, admit that austerity isn't working and say they want to take the alternative stimulus and growth-based approach to recovery then the Troika would issue very different advice.
“It would likely be advising the government to target high earners and the wealthy not social welfare recipients.”
