Start date for body scanner trial period welcomed - McCartney

30 August, 2012

Sinn Féin MLA Raymond McCartney has welcomed the announcement that a pilot study of body scanners in Magilligan Prison and Hydebank Centre will begin in September.

Raymond McCartney said:

“We welcome the fact that the Minister has now announced the beginning of a trial period of the use of body scanners which if successful will remove the need for full body searches.

“Sinn Féin has been pressing the Minister for some time now to look at other security systems in place both in gaols in the rest of Ireland and in Britain.  We believe that with the latest technology there is no need for intrusive body searches”

“We have been consistently opposed to the unnecessary and humiliating practice of strip searching. I will be closely following this trial period through the Justice Committee to ensure if it is successful we don’t waste any further time in having a new system implemented.”
