Gardaí harass Sinn Féin election workers in Waterford City

11 June, 2004

Sinn Féin Director of Elections for Munster Ken O‚Connell has accused the Gardai of outrageous interference in the electoral process in Waterford City today. Mr O'Connell said:

"Throughout the day Gardaí in Waterford deliberately harassed Sinn Féin election teams and the EU Candidate David Cullinane as well as Sinn Féin members engaged in loud hailing in the city.

'It is very clear that Gardaí took a conscious decision to disrupt the Sinn Féin campaign in Waterford. This interference in the electoral process is unacceptable and unwarranted and mirrors the experience of party members in the Six Counties who yesterday had to endure similar harassment from the British Army and PSNI.

"This is a very serious matter and we will be registering our concern at the Gardai behaviour directly with the government." ENDS
