Election results must ensure real change on Dublin City Council

15 June, 2004

Chairperson of Dublin Sinn Féin Justin Moran today thanked all those who helped to elect Mary Lou McDonald as MEP and to elect fourteen Sinn Féin Councillors across Dublin City and County. He said that Sinn Féin's priority was to implement our agenda for change and to bring an end to Fianna Fáil/Labour cosy consensus that has failed this city for years.

Mr. Moran said:

"The election of fourteen Councillors across Dublin City and County and the election of Mary Lou McDonald as MEP signals a major transformation in the political landscape of the City.

"The election results on Dublin City Council, in particular, must ensure that there is real change on the City Council and not just a continuation of Fianna Fáil/Labour cosy cartel which has failed this city for the last five years or some other similar formulation.

"It is clear that the people of Dublin want change and Sinn Féin will work with all those who genuinely want to address the many problems facing the city including the housing crisis, traffic chaos, bringing forward a proper waste management strategy, supporting public services, the growing drug problem and the many other issues which we set out in the manifesto which we launched during the election campaign. It is also essential that we bring inclusion and openness to the Council and ensure that communities across the City are represented equally.

"This weekend we saw a beginning to the process of change but we need to keep up the momentum. Over the next few days Dublin Sinn Féin intend to meet with other parties and independents elected to the Council to discuss how best to implement an agenda for change for Dublin."ENDS
