Review of exams status welcomed - Hazzard
Sinn Féin Education Spokesperson Chris Hazzard has welcomed the announcement by Education Minister John O’Dowd that he is initiating a review of GCSE and GCE A-Level examinations.
Mr. Hazzard said,
“The unilateral announcement by British Education Minister Michael Gove that he was to abolish GCSE’s in England and change criteria of examinations across Scotland, Wales and the North of Ireland has caused uncertainty amongst teachers, pupils and parents to the current value of these exams.
“It is important that the value of qualification gained throughout our schooling system are maintained to a level where they are universally recognised in order for students to progress through secondary and third level education.
“I welcome the prompt announcement by Education Minister John O’Dowd that he has commissioned the Council for Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment to conduct a in-depth review of GCSE and A level qualifications here.
“This review I believe will not only protect the value of examinations in the North of Ireland but will dovetail into the reform of the education system that is geared to increase academic excellence and allow all of our children to reach their full potential.”
