Nick Griffin must have immunity removed following hate speech - Anderson
Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson is to seek to remove the immunity from prosecution of BNP leader Nick Griffin which is granted under his status as MEP following hate speech on his Twitter account regarding Catholics in the North of Ireland.
Speaking today Ms Anderson said:
“If there were to be a prosecution of BNP leader Nick Griffin we would need to see the immunity that MEPs enjoy being removed.
“The immunity is intended to protect the freedom of expression of MEPs. However, it should not cover immunity on grounds of hate-speech.
“As MEP I am calling for his immunity against prosecution to be lifted by the European Parliament .
“Immunity from prosecution cannot be lifted until there is a request from the Attorney General to the President of the European Parliament who refers the matter to the committee on legal affairs. This should act as an incentive for the PSNI to pursue prosecution and I have been in contact with the PSNI regarding his inflammatory comments.”
