Welcome that Children’s Hospital decision finally made – Ó Caoláin

6 November, 2012 - by Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD

Sinn Féin Health & Children spokesperson Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD has welcomed the fact that the Cabinet has finally made a decision on the location of the new National Children’s Hospital. He said this project was “long overdue” and needs to be delivered as soon as possible.

He said:
“I welcome the announcement that a decision has finally been made on the location for the National Children’s Hospital. This process has gone on for far too long. The priority now is to move quickly to the planning and development stage. Every effort should be made to expedite the delivery of this facility as near to the target date of 2016 as possible, despite the disappointing view from Health Minister James Reilly that that target cannot now be reached.

“No site is perfect and whatever site was chosen was always going to pose challenges, including St. James’s Hospital. The disappointment for those sites which had made substantial cases for the location of the National Children’s Hospital is understandable, particularly the Mater Hospital site, which was at such an advanced stage.

“However, the priority now must be to move quickly to the planning and development stage of the long overdue National Children’s Hospital. And in the interim the Government must ensure full support for the existing children’s hospitals which are struggling to cope and, to that end, it should halt Health Minister Reilly’s vicious regime of healthcare cuts.”
