Emergency legislation will help protect forestry industry - McMullan

6 November, 2012 - by Oliver McMullan

Sinn Féin Agriculture spokesperson Oliver McMullan MLA has said that the statement today from Agriculture Minister Michelle O’Neill was a sensible approach to take in relation to dealing with disease in Ash trees.

 Mr. McMullan said,

“This decision today will not only help protect the native Ash trees but also allow Hurley stick manufactures to continue to trade and therefore protect their businesses.

“The measures being implemented are a sensible precaution in protecting our trees from further damage from this disease.

“I am happy that the Minister has also received similar assurances from her counterpart in the Irish Government as this disease has no respect of borders.

“The emergency legislation introduced simultaneously today in the Assembly and the Dáil will be a continuation of the Fortress Ireland policy designed to protect our agricultural industries including our forests and woodlands.

“I would call on all those involved in the lumber industry to adhere to all restrictions until the Department gives the all clear as it is crucial we protect our indigenous species of flora and fauna on the island.”
