“Significant” Supreme Court judgement does not take from need for ‘Yes’ vote – Ó Caoláin

8 November, 2012 - by Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD

Commenting on the Supreme Court judgement on referendum information, Sinn Féin Children spokesperson Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin TD said:

“This is a significant judgement upholding the principles of fairness in referendum campaigns set by the McKenna judgement. It does not take from the need for a ‘Yes’ vote this Saturday, in order to strengthen the rights of children in the constitution.

“The issue of government spending has been raised in previous referendum campaigns and has been a continuing cause of concern. The full judgement of the Supreme Court will need to be studied carefully when it becomes available. The government’s approach to the conduct of referendums has to be seriously questioned in the light of this judgement.

“It would be a setback for children if reaction to this court outcome were to jeopardise the adoption of the proposed constitutional amendment on children’s rights and I again urge people to vote ‘Yes’ on Saturday.” ENDS
