Nobel Laureate’s comments should be a wake-up call for government on Youth Unemployment – Reilly

8 November, 2012 - by Kathryn Reilly

Sinn Féin’s Spokesperson on Youth Affairs Senator Kathryn Reilly has welcomed the comments by Nobel Economics Laureate Professor Christopher Pissarides in the Seanad today on Youth Unemployment.

“Professor Pissarides’ comments today should act as a wake-up call for this government and its do-nothing approach on youth unemployment. Professor Pissarides said a spell of long-term of unemployment can be as damaging to job prospects as a criminal record. This should be a wake-up call for this government because only last month an EU report showed that 40% of unemployed young Irish people are now long-term unemployed.

“He went on to warn about cutting education spending during a recession, another warning to the government that their policy is wrong.

“I particularly welcome his assertion that we are following the path of austerity too much and that this is damaging the prospects of a recovery in job prospects for our young people.

“The government is doing far too little to tackle the specific issue of youth unemployment and its general economic policy is contracting the economy and further shrinking any chance of young people finding jobs at home.

“Today’s comments by Professor Pissarides must be heeded. Sinn Féin will soon be outlining what we would do differently to tackle youth unemployment.”
