Catalan vote on independence must be respected and upheld

17 November, 2012 - by Seán Crowe TD

Sinn Fein Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs and the Irish Diaspora Sean Crowe TD responding to a question put Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore TD during the week said:

"It is very encouraging to hear that the Tánaiste and the Government recognise that citizens  have a right to “establish the arrangements for their own democratic governance” system.

In recent times there has been a growing rise in the support for self-determination among the Catalan people.

Catalans go to the polls on November 25,in a historic election and what-ever the final outcome, their views expressed in this democratic election must be respected and upheld.

We have  also recently seen that the Tory government in Westminster has agreed to hold a referendum in Scotland on the issue of Scottish independence.  I would hope that if the Catalan people give a clear  vote in favour of parties that want Catalan self-determination and independence, that the Spanish government will recognise the democratic wish of the Catalan people, and enter into negotiations with these parties on the issue of Catalan sovereignity and self-determination."
